Should I buy a plant that has a lot of flowers?

I've noticed that the stores in my area have started selling mums for planting. Some of them have tons of flowers but many are still just green. Which ones should I buy to plant? Are the ones that haven't flowered better because they will bloom later and thus last longer into the winter? I know nothing about gardening.

Look for a plant with a good number of stems, a good root system ans with lots of forming buds. That gives the plant time to adjust when planted out and it will then grow stronger and flower for longer.





Plants with lots of flowers will go over quicker.
Reply:Depends, if I had a party soon, I'd get the flowers. If I'm patient I'd look for a plant just starting to flower but loaded with unopened buds. By now the buds should be evident on the plant. If they aren't visible, chances of flowers appearing this year drop.
Reply:No, I bought 10 Mums from Lowes.Within 2 weeks those that were all flowered withered and died. Those that had lots of buds are still going strong(6 weeks now).I also noticed the yellows died faster and the purples faded to white.
Reply:You need to have some flowers showing , for a nice look, but also need a plant that still has some buds, so they will then bloom after the other bloomed ones fade off. Half flowered/have buds is a good option.

You'll be able to enjoy them a lot longer...but you'll also have something to enjoy right now :)





Also check to make sure the plant has healthy looking foliage %26amp; doesn't have any insects hidden in its leaves or on the soil. That could do the plant in in no time.

Reply:Buy green or you won't get the longevity you want. If you need them to get instant results buy with about half the flowers open and cut them off as soon as they die. Don't forget to cut the dead flowers off as they die so it will keep blooming. This is called "Dead heading", it is used for many types of flowering plants to keep them blooming.





Do a Yahoo search on the type of flower you want to plant, there is tons of info out there for you and your growing region.





Go to your local nursery, Lowe's, etc and ask questions. Just don't buy a bunch of un-needed fertilizers, most of the potted mums out now have it in the soil. Read the labels or ask.
