Hanging basket of flowers - what kind to buy?

My house faces west. I have a largish tree in the parkway and then on another side of my porch I have a tree closer to the house. I love to hang baskets of flowering plants to the front porch but everything I get dies. I have tried geraniums but they don't get enouch sun. I've tried vincas, they died, I've tried the other things that look like vincas - they died too. I've watered everything according to directions. I also like to have something that is somewhat uniform since its in the front of the house. Plus, only one side of the porch gets a lot of late day sun. What do you think? Do you know anything that grows in the sun and/or the shade that flowers and even grows longish? Help - I'm sick of throwing money away. Thanks!

Whatever you choose, it is time to give the pot a wrap of peat moss so the dirt inside does not overheat during all the sun. This will also help retain your regular watering. So, it is not so much the plants problem, as long as they are sun loving. Just protect those roots.
Reply:How about some ferns?
Reply:solve the problem and get faux flowers. Sure there are vines and hanging flowers like fuscias but with it getting hotter outdoors you never know just when to water them so they either get too much or not enough water. Why not consult with the nearest plant nursery or talk with a landscaper in your area? You could use just a lot of arborvitae or other green plants then paint parts of your house like around the windows or shutters a color.
Reply:My porch does not really get that much sun during the day - mostly afternoon, and I do hanging baskets every year. I have had each of the following at one time or another in baskets which did very well:

fuschias (fav)

new guniea impatiens (love)

nemesia (white smells like coconut)

petunias

alyssum

double impatiens (look like mini roses)

dahlias

lobelia

trailing licorice plant (will make a veil around pot)

spikes

million bells (type of petunia)

chenille plant (fuzzy pink flower fingers)

I'm sure there are others I've forgotten, but all of these come in tons of colors, and can be mixed. There are now hanging baskets that have the easy watering resevoir on the bottoms so they get just the right amount of water.
