because the flowers in a flower shop have been cut not pulled and the cut is on a 45 degree angle which allows them to live longer with little water when you pick a flower you do damage to the stem you should cut and cut at a 45 degree angle

they also use a solution in their water to help maintain them. you can get almost the same effect by adding a couple spoonfuls of plain old sugar to your vase. about 1 tbsp per 2 quarts of water. that will give them about another 5 or 6 days.
