Why do cut flowers that you buy in a store last longer than flowers that you pick outside?

Cut-flower life depends on what KIND of flower more than anything else. Stores sell flowers that are known to have a long vase-life. If you grow those same flowers - you'll find they last a long time right from your garden. Daisies can last 3 weeks in a vase. Carnations have an amazing vase-life as well.

Conversely, many wildflowers will wilt almost immediately upon being cut. It's not WHERE you get the flower, it's what flower species it is.
